BlackBerry Torch: The HTML5 Developer Scorecard

RIM’s latest smart phone, the BlackBerry Torch 9800, just came to market with a first class Webkit browser. We were anxious to run some tests and see how it stacks up.

Could HTML5 be the promised land we are all looking for, it would be good for the industry for a common interface to be adopted which will lead to the demise of the over hyped app.

Try playing more than one audio source consecutively on a page without reloading it. On the Blackberry Torch you will fail. I had to resort to a hidden iframe (thankfully Torch will autoplay unlike iOS) in order to play multiple tracks.

Don’t even get me started on the woefully incomplete audio event coverage. Want to know when an audio clip has finished playing? Good luck with that….

@Matt R. I don’t think anyone’s surprised to find that a test designed by Apple runs better on Apple’s hardware. :\

All this is good news. And according to a press release from RIM (http://press.rim.com/release.jsp?id=4237), the new browser will be available on BlackBerry Bolds and Pearls too, although presumably its performance will be lower on these models. I look forward to Sencha Touch support for this browser.

I like that Blackberry is going the right direction. It only takes one good move to stay in the game. Motorolla proved that with the droid.

This is very, very good news Blackberry support will be a very important part of an upcoming mobile project for us, hopefully the new browser will allow us to tick that box and use Sencha Touch as our mobile development framework.

Try loading http://www.apple.com/html5/ on the Torch. It’s significantly slower (on things that it can do) than even an ancient iPhone 3G running 3.0. Try the 360* rotation demo, for example.
