Ext Designer Released: Watch the Screencast!
April 22, 2010 | Abraham Elias

We are very excited to announce that we've released Ext Designer, our desktop application for rapidly generating Ext JS interfaces. Ext Designer is a full cross-platform (Windows, Mac, and Linux) desktop application written completely in Ext JS. We’ve been hard at work on Ext Designer, and we know you’ll find it worth the wait. Download a trial today.
We actually had a soft release last month on Twitter in order to quash some early bugs before announcing everywhere. Since the initial release we have had over 100 bug fixes and we're now at 43,000 downloads and counting!
Who Ext Designer is For
Ext Designer works on two levels--as a prototyping tool as well as a code generation tool. Particularly for complex UIs, it saves tens of hours of development time that are normally spent tweaking layouts and making sure that nested elements play well together. Best of all, (and unlike most prototyping tools), it produces clean, object oriented code that looks like the code you would have written yourself.
We think that Ext Designer will be a great tool for both single developers and teams working together to build applications. The drag and drop interface can be used by anyone involved in the design of an application. A project can easily be started by a business analyst, passed to a user interface designer, and finally handed off to the development team to be enhanced with functionality—saving time every step of the way. We've even used Ext Designer to build parts of Ext Designer!
Features
The main screen of Ext Designer allows developers and designers to assemble layouts by dragging and dropping components together. They can quickly change the layout of a specific component, or use the inspector to manipulate more detailed properties.
In addition to components and the visual side of an application, there are also several new ways to incorporate and configure data stores. These data stores can then be bound directly to components like DataGrids and Trees. Whether your data is in JSON, XML, a simple Javascript array, or an Ext Direct connection, Ext Designer can help you build a data store for it faster than ever.
Once the application design is finished, code can be exported on a component-by-component basis, as either JSON or Javascript classes. Again, this code is still Javascript, so it can easily be extended with the IDE of your choice.
Interface
Those who have seen early previews of Ext Designer are in for a nice surprise. We’ve completely redesigned the application for final release, giving it a whole new level of polish. In addition to a better look and feel, the new product chrome looks separate and distinct from the actual interfaces you are creating, which we think will prove very helpful.
All in all, we have truly put our hearts into Ext Designer and we hope you'll find it as useful as we have. We will be hosting some webinars soon, but download Ext Designer today and try it out for yourself!

3 years agoIt’s too expensive for such a simple tool. May be $50 or $30.

3 years agoI love it. Looks like it can be a real help when prototyping (for UI designers and BAs) and for starter code for developers. @WeWant: I don’t really care for an inline code editor, if it saves me some time getting started and looking up cfg options, then I can do the real coding in my IDE of choice.

3 years agoNice layout tool, but way too expensive fora partial solution. It is pricing itself towards Morfik, Magic or Alpha 5 where you get a complete development tool.
Ext Designer should cost around $50 because it is only a designer.

3 years agoVery interesting! I really like the IDE independence. I switch between VS and Eclipse depending on the client project I’m working on. The last thing I need is ANOTHER IDE to learn or get locked into. That said, I like the simplicity and power of this tool. I’m viewing the demo right now and I can see how this can help streamline my customers’ cryptic specs (fields inside fieldsets, etc) or at least minimize the tinkering of configs in code for a desired result. I don’t mind the price, if it will save me a few hours of tedious work - which I think it will.

3 years agoWould love to see a tutorial that wasn’t moving at warp speed…but cool demo nonetheless! I would hope the tutorial, when provided, discusses the best practices to using the tool in an ongoing project where original designs need to be tweaked after the fact. In other words, should we attempt to leave the exported JS classes untouched and write implementation code in separate files, so that we can go back to the Designer and tweak the layout code without overwriting the developers code? Sure would love some guidance along these lines. I think this tool is going to be a huge time saver down the road…but I also think we need some help to smooth out the learning curve. Thanks

3 years agoIf it has component event handler and we could code it directly within the editor, it would be PERFECT! For now, it’s just a nice form designer. I wish it could be as advance as VB or Delphi. :D

3 years agoTerrific, this one is a great and wonderful discovery. This Ext Designer allows developers and designers to assemble layouts, which is a great help.
Nice one!

3 years agoLet me first to tell that it looks great and really it’s very useful!
From other side I wish to use it for app interfaces prototype creation. But I found that a lot of components are not available in designer. For example, where are charts?

3 years agoDo you have trial version available for download
Mike
3 years agoIt’s way too overpriced - being just a UI designer, not a full-blown IDE, it should be priced at $40-$50. For a fraction of $299 I can get Coda and just type out the JS and test right there. I mean, Dreamweaver CS5 is $299, and it is a full-blow design & development suite, for crying out loud!!!

2 years agoXML is principally a means to storing and transporting data, you will notice that xml tags are not predefined and therefore do not carry semantics, you as the programmer decide the purpose and meaning of your tags. Although not sure I could agree that RDF is the best architecture for context based system, I would instead look at classic conceptual models such as Class Diagrams or even Entity Relationships?
