Question from a n00b

I'm familiar with web development, and I've even done a few small "classic" webapps, but I'm new to the whole AJAX craze. Ext looks like a pretty good choice for getting into AJAX webapps, but I was wondering if there is any document which describes what, if anything, is lost by using Ext standalone vs on top of an external library. The FAQ entry makes it sound like there's no point in using Ext+something else unless you're already using that something else - is that a pretty accurate assessment of the situation?
