Having run many forums and also a member of a lot myself, I just want to make some suggestions:

make it default that creators of threads are subscribed to that thread and maybe also if they post to a thread they are subscribed - helps tremendously to speed things along and stop one-time posters from forgetting their threads. Joomla's forums were the first I saw do this by default and it helped so much - they have over 1 million posts now in only 2 years i think.
make it default to be notified by email on PMs - most people don't check here every day to see if they have a PM
create a beginner forum - I get the sense that some people don't like answering noob questions or even seeing them in these forums, and in some threads it shows, but if there was a forum for questions that are really noobish, maybe it wouldn't tick off the advanced guys so much to see a lot of them in the forums where alongside of a really advanced thread you have a thread titled: "i can't get alert to work". Ext is really cool and it's going to attract a lot of people that know very little JS...
