Extending a grid with userfield like "search"

Hello,

i would like to extend a grid with a couple of field like search, filter etc. (input, checkbox, combo fields)
This fields should either show up above the header or below the paging bar.

Is this something that can be done via the toolbar, or can the toolbar only extended by icons/buttons?

I believe there are some examples in the Examples forum of doing this. I believe the toolbar add fn can take an HTML element in addition to a button/separator.
