Overwriting the Content-type for XHR answer

Hello everyone,

I need your help to figure out a solution for the following issue: I have to implement some server modules, but I'm restricted to reply only using "text/html" content-type both for XML or JSON answers.
Please let me know if you could give me any hints how to overwrite the XHR answers, on client side, to consume answers in JSON / XML formats.
