View Full Version : Release Schedule?

I was just curious what is extjs's release schedule?
eg: when all the little bugs / added features in the SVN
will be made available to the general public.
Also, is the SVN access worth the $300/yr?
Meaning, is there active bug-fixes, or is it more of
a place for development of future versions of extjs?
Thanks,
mm_202.

There is another thread(s) asking for a roadmap - to date nothing specific has been announced. SVN includes all bug fixes as they occur (you'll see a lot of bug threads that refer to what the SVN version of a fix is).
Future releases will likely be available in SVN depending on stability. This was the case with 2.0, which was available as pre-alpha code a number of months prior to the 1st alpha release.

Also, regarding the value of a subscription, you aren't paying just for SVN access. It also includes premium forum support as well as direct email support if needed. Most people who need professional level support should find that to be a bargain.

Okay, thanks guys. I just scanned over the threads, but I should of done a search.
Would either of you be able to give me some idea of how different (better) the SVN
version would be than the 2.0 release? Or is that already done/listed in that other thread? :)

AFAIK there is no ongoing list of fixes other than the forum threads. If you have SVN access you can see the history of all the changes which refer to what they have fixed.

or are the bug-fixes driving premium membership adoption ( <-- NOT meant in a snarky way )

There are minor revsion releases planned, the Ext 1.x line has had several and I expect 2.x will follow suit. Like Brian said above, I think the SVN access is more of a bonus for those who want/need the additional support options provided by opting for premium membership.

I have no problem with Premium members getting a privileged SVN perspective on minor fix progress, but I noticed this week even a premium member has asked for a 2008 roadmap.
Historically ExtJS did not need a roadmap because of the stellar evolution in the early days. Now the release cycle is closer to industry norms a roadmap is needed.
Even good news like additional recruitment into the Core Ext developer team is not communicated.

OK its really bugging me...what does the acronym S V N stand for?
Couldn't find it in the faq or anywhere.
I see it lots and had the impression you could get "it" to get new fixes ... does the $300 refer to the source without support in the license?
Curious...

SVN stands for Subversion, it is a common version control system for source code similar to CVS. When you have multiple people working on a project it really becomes necessary to keep versions of files so it is easy for others to see what has changed, among other things.
When you purchase premium support you get access to the Ext SVN repository where you can get bug fixes and updates to the source code as they happen instead of waiting for the next official release.

SVN stands for Subversion which is the source control management program that our project as well as a number of other open source projects use.

As a Premium Member you have access to the SVN repository and can retrieve the latest copy of the source whenever you'd like. If you've lost your login and password to SVN email support@extjs.com if you need help setting up a tool like TortoiseSVN (an svn client) we could assist you with that as well.

So do any of the core developers actually want to answer the question as to why there is no roadmap? Seriously, how hard could it be?
No one really has any actual idea as to what is going on with the framework. Just write it down somewhere, seriously.

Wow. Nice.
We plan on publishing a road map soon, and will let everyone know when it's available.

Can you define "soon"? Currently only the community creates new / enhanced components to ExtJs. What can we expect from ExtJs?

2.0 final just came out about a month and a half ago, and we're still working on bug fixes in addition to other stuff. 2.0.1 should be coming out within the next week or so. We're still trying to decide what the road map should be both for 2.1, 3.0 and beyond, and we're actively working on a list to make public. Please, please have a little patience.

I absolutely LOVE this product. Will be paying for my subscription in a few days. Even though I have no relation to him, I am embarrassed at the tone taken to the core developers in this thread.
I am also anxiously awaiting a release roadmap. But I don't want it until it's ready.
I would also suggest a method by which users can vote for features to be included.
thanks,

Perhaps I'm a little tone deaf, but I don't see where any of the posts are disrespectful of the core developers or their work. My guess is that everyone who's posting to this thread is doing so because they use Ext and sincerely want it to be the best it can possibly be. That being said, if you search the forum for ["road map" or roadmap] you will find 66 posts discussing the need for a road map going back to November 2006. If anyone hears frustration in any of the posts, my guess is that's the reason.
I agree with the most recent posts that the core developers have been working absolute wonders. I too am a true believer. However, IMHO communicating future direction has not been this project's strong point, and a road map is one of the few places where there's obvious room for improvement. The value of a road map is that it provides a formal mechanism for communicating future direction from the developers and eliciting ideas from the community. It also allows the community to more effectively coordinate their efforts to build complimentary, non-core functionality rather than repeatedly building things that become redundant with the next core release.
If the problem is manpower, feel free to shoot me a private message and I would happily volunteer to help.
