What are the practical limits in the sizes of Ext grids, trees, etc?

I have a grid with 500 rows and 30 visible columns with ten hidden ones. Sorting becomes slow. I know the responsiveness really depends on the browser used and the hardware the browser is running on.

Most of the examples that I see use paging and only show one or two dozen rows. But what are the largest rendered grids that some of you have seen/used?

I am definately going to use Liverid for my application. That thing rocks and really should be included with the distribution. But that's cheating - I love it!
