iPhone Web 2.0 apps

So it was announced yesterday that the only way you can create apps for the upcoming iPhone is to create apps for the browser. Steve Jobs is pushing developers to create Web2.0/Ajax apps that is optimized for the iPhone. Jobs also mentions that they created some way to access built in features of the iPhone, maybe via Javascript.

Anyone excited about this? I think this is good news for some, and it might be a good time to start creating sample apps optimized for a 320x480 screen.

I wonder if it will allow storing the Ext library somewhere locally so access will be faster over an EDGE connection...

What do you all think?

This has always been the ideal way for me to write mobile apps, but I'm concerned about the phones browser compatability. Do they envision this as a parallel to Firefox/IE ?

I just found a video for Aptana IDE with iPhone support but the coolest part was in the tutorial it showed a EXT Accordion on the iPhone.

Just got an iPhone yesterday. The Ext demo works believe it or not. What's not supported is dragging. So, avoid drags and drops, as well as draggable pop-up dialog windows. ;)

I noticed the demo dragging google maps. Is that not supported when running on the actual phone?

Keeping a copy of extjs loaded in safari would be sweet. It would be even better if the library was coded into the browser so we could use optimized extjs in safari and download the extjs javascript library on other browsers. Hey Jack, maybe you should shop the ext js api around to steve jobs, billy g and adobe as well as maybe google/mozilla. Don't cha wonder if one day one of these libraries (zimbra, extjs) is going to get built into the browser?

I'll bet Jobs used that demo just so we would talk about Safari. He probably also knows exactly how many hits a day this site is getting!

my guess: Jobs or Adobe will push it forward
MS or google will pay the most money when it becomes inevitable.
