Why call it a rip off? DHTML goodies has been around for a good long time, and they've got a different focus than ext.

This was brought up a while back. Some of the components were a rip-off of our styles (esp. the border layout stuff), and after we brought it to their attention, they at least added an attribution on the main page:
"The idea(not code) is based on concepts by Jack Slocums yui-ext."

Wow, no kidding? That's really embarrassing for them. (and teach me to open my big mouth, too :D)

true quite some design rip-off.
but i must say i like their region-collapse button much more than the button in the title.
especially when regions are splitted horizontally i find the position of the collapse button quite "unintuitive". and the dblclick functionality ain't obvious enough (imho).
so why not return the favor and "rip" their splitbar ;)

I can see both points. I mean how hard is it to come up with your own style color instead of the Blue that Ext used. But any who at lease they gave us props.

Agreed. Get off yourselves folks. They (unlike adobe) put information on where they got the idea from and a link. That's not a rip off! It's a compliment and the greatest form of flattery.=;

Um, yeah, AFTER we emailed and called them out on it :)
And it IS a big deal, because the look and feel is one of the major things that sets Ext apart from other frameworks. For them to (originally) pass off the design of BorderLayout as their own original work is absolutely a rip-off, and they acknowledged as much.

I Feel the same way about the adobe group, they actually TOOK yui-ext and embedded into an apollo app, To say that dhtml goodies is a rip off is BS as far as i'm concerned. Hell you guys should be pleased that there are look-a-likes out there. Imitation is the greatest form of flattery.
If only big sites would start to use extjs, that would be something. I know that cnn.com, digg and apple use prototype and some scriptaculous.

Some of those images look eerily identical to Ext's, anybody care to do an md5 check on the images?
I think this whole thing is pretty f**ked up, i mean come on, a list of their themes: "Gray theme, Light cyan theme and Zune theme"
Not to mention that they stuff doesn't work half as well, their animations are jumpy etc.

Well if it wasn't for their site, I may have never found Ext:"> ... and I probably wouldn't appreciate Ext as much if it weren't for the problems in their code.
8-|Well maybe not, Ext is quite impressive in its own right... I've been looking for the right library for a long time, and the tree component alone was exactly what I needed - aside from breaking the bank on a commercial product there were really no good options left for me aside from using the inferior dhtmlgoodies. When I explored further and saw that link immediately I wanted to try the inspiring product. I waited for 1.0 before really diving in but the water here sure is nice :) -
Anyways, since they happen to rank quite well in Google, the free advertising and extra traffic has to be good for Ext. Ext is obviously superior I find it quite strange how they managed to fill up their sponsors list... (then again, maybe its for the Google ranking).
They still have some decent stand alone scripts, and I'm sure they can peacefully co-exist... they are not much of a threat thats for sure. Anyways, Competition - it's a part of life, and is good to keep us all on our toes.
