Our project is currently using gwt-ext with XHTML strict doctype, which works fine. But since development stopped on gwt-ext, we are considering to migrate to GXT. At first glance, GXT seems to require HTML 4.01 Transitional, which is huge step back for us. We have tried XHTML transitional, hoping for a compromise, but some of the GXT components are just not spaced/sized correctly with XHTML doctype.

Are there plans to officially support XHTML strict? and when? As I understand, gwt-ext is much like a wrapper for ext-js, and ext-js works with XHTML, why not GXT?

GXT is not a wrapper over extjs. It is completly written in Java. 2.1 Will add strict doctype support.

the latest gwt-ext uses ext 2.0.2.

does Ext GWT 2 feature everything in ext 2.0.2? how will Ext GWT 2.1 compare to Ext in terms of UI components and features?

Best would be to compare the examples. You can do exactly the same:
