I have created a wiki page (linked from the Ext Manual index page) for cataloging sightings of Ext. The page includes both public sightings and internal (intranet, etc.) usage examples. If you have spotted Ext in the wild, please add to the list if we don't already have it!

Good idea!

In IE6 I can't read the usage field because of 'flying' images. Please see the image.

the desktop demo is fantastic ... especially the toolbar / taskbar / icon stuff.

i'll be converting my demo at figital.com (http://figital.com) to this framework.

would love to see drag/drop remembered for the icons.

hopefully there's a triggered event for window dropping ... so the windowing variables can be persisted, etc.

Yup I'm one of the developers for LiquidPlanner. Ext has been really handy for building an application style webapp. We have our own custom grid, and a few other controls, but have been making some good incremental use of Ext for menus, dialogs, and such.

And the west Panel needs top margin 5 and left margin 5 just fro consistency.

Hi there, I would like to know is it possible to get a look on Financial Markets Seismometer site code? This app is on wiki (http://extjs.com/learn/Manual:Sightings), and according to its description the code is open.

The Financial Markets Seismometer is a free site that helps investors spot significant financial market movements. Its user interface is completely built using the ExtJS framework. In particular it makes use of the new grouping support in the Grid component. It also uses Viewport, Tabs... As the code is simple and open source, it might be reused as a template for Web sites that focus on data presentation.

Is it true?

It's an OK start.

It does show some signs of rendering, or overnesting in no-layout Containers though.

When you pop up a details Window, the Grids that show in its TabPanel, the whole Grid scrolls. This is wrong. The Grid should be added to the TabPanel as a child item, and the grid scrolls its content.

there are many ways to skin a cat.

spammers may reserve slots for future spam by posting seemingly harmless remarks in forums (which are often unrelated to the main thrust of the thread), and subsequently updating their forum signatures to include site links later on.

I'm using a fork of qWikiOffice for my web desktop at http://cometdesktop.com/
I have created a few apps for it, including a Jabber client, an IRC client, Hulu TV (US only) app, Last.fm radio, notepad, and two apps from the examples: Feed reader and Simple Tasks.

The Jabber and IRC clients use my web socket library, Sprocket.Socket These apps are proof that you can build socket based apps in html/js and export them to an Adobe AIR without any code changes!
The Hulu TV app fetches feeds from hulu.com and allows you to watch TV episodes. I use server side caching to avoid hammering hulu servers.
The Simple tasks app uses the sql model and is connected to an sqlite db on the server side. This gives sql access to the desktop apps without allowing access to the actual desktop database.
The desktop uses an ajax state provider so all of the window positions and sizes are persistent.

I've also built an Ajaxterm type app called rTerm that allows you to open a real terminal window on the server. For obvious reasons, it isn't available on the guest account. See the screenshot below.

BTW, If you or your company is looking for a skilled JS and Perl engineer. My resume is available on my site: http://xant.us/ I'm looking for a FT position, and I will relocate.

Comet Desktop is a fork of Qwikioffice v0.7.
License: GPL, see Comet Desktop at Google Code (http://code.google.com/p/cometdesktop/) for features and more info.

The latest site I've developed involving Ext: http://www2.britxbox.co.uk/ - a UK Xbox fan site.

The behind-the-scenes admin system for the site is entirely Ext based and the Xbox 360 style interface on the front page is animated using Ext.
I thought I'd show it here as it's the kind of thing that many people tend to assume is only possible using "other libraries" and that Ext is only for office-like apps.

Animal
11 Dec 2008, 2:26 AM
I like your animations on the main page of rotating the images to the front, and recaculating the correct perspective size. Was that your own code? What other stuff in that page uses Ext?

I was thinking about a similar effect after I saw a Flash widget on amazon.com which rotates a set of images round a "circle". The circle is made to appear as if it's on a 3d plane, so the animation path is in fact an ellipse. I'm sure it would be possible with Ext. You'd have to get into the Ext.lib.anim functions quite deeply.

Thanks Animal - Yes, it's all my own work - the perspectives are calculated to work with a fixed number of images (4) which is all that page was ever designed to use so it's quite easy when you're working with static numbers like that.

Originally I was going to do it in flash but that would have been the easy way out :D

On that page there's currently not much else that uses Ext but there are a couple of "live" widgets in development which show current forum activity etc and those will be entirely Ext driven. there's also some widgets in the forums which use it too (topic tagging and forum 'achievements')

@Xantus - I don't mind, but a credit/link back would be appreciated

As you can see, the admin interface for the site is a much more familiar Ext experience:

Feel free - the requirement I designed to was to support 4 items, no more no less, so there was no need for me to develop it further at this time.
All it essentially does is display 4 items from an array so making it support any number of items should be quite an easy change. I look forward to seeing what you do with it.

It's a fork of qwikioffice. The backend is Perl instead of php, and is heavily modified.
Sure the themes are the same, but the workings behind it are different.

Here's a list of features, which Qwikioffice doesn't have.

Built in task bar tray (right hand side)
Sound Manager and volume control
Remote registry. Window sizes, positions, etc are persistent. (Ajax backed Ext.state.Manager)
Drag and Drop shortcuts (alpha)
Secure login. No passwords are sent in the open.
Ajaxterm support! (rTerm)
Isolated remote database access with Sqlite2 (Use SQL, or SQL based data models from JavaScript? (http://code.google.com/p/cometdesktop/w/edit/JavaScript))
Supports Web Sockets (Sprocket.Socket and Sprocket.Gateway)
Network status plugin (Shows Ajax activity)
Google Analytics integration. Track usage and know what apps to focus your efforts on.
Window Edge Snapping (http://xant.us/ext-ux/examples/window-edge-snap/)
Hierarchical (channel based) PubSub? (http://code.google.com/p/cometdesktop/w/edit/PubSub) interface. Easily tie into STOMP and other pubsubs.See the Comet Desktop project (http://code.google.com/p/cometdesktop/) site for more info.

I wasn't trying to knock the work you did. I think it was more the way it was displayed. Kind of made it look like you created the whole thing yourself. Granted the applications were done by you but the desktop foundation was done elsewhere. On a side note...what's the reason for the edge snap? I mean outside the wow factor was there any application you had in mind to use it for or was it one of those things you did just because you could? Just curious :) And kudos to you for perl!!! Nice to know there's still people out there that haven't resorted to .NET

Sorry, my bad. I forgot to edit that post to include that it's GPL, and a Qwikioffice fork.

I have changed the internals so much that the two projects are incompatible. The entire back-end is Perl too.

The window edge snapping makes it easier to organize and align windows. Several windows apps do this already. It does have a wow factor, but it's also useful.

I understand that the "open source" idea is supposed to contribute to rapid evolution of applications along with multiple choices for users (preventing monopolies, etc.). However, some of the things you have added to the 0.7 qwikioffice version seem trivial and some are in the process of being implemented by qwikioffice themselves.

Why not contribute to the qwikioffice community versus making some changes and starting a direct competitor (I have heard rumors about different back ends being developed and contributed to the community)?

Either way, I am looking forward to seeing the modified backend. What modifications to the backend have been made? When will the Comet source code be available? I don't know much about Perl...what are the advantages?

Didn't intend to sound rude concerning the changes you have made to the qwikioffice desktop but I have been following the project closely, watching it evolve and grow due to the countless hours put in by mxracer and other community members. It would be a shame if you were just trying to make a quick name for yourself and your desktop at the expense of others hard work.

In the end, I am sure mxracer and the qwikioffice community is flattered to see you "forking" their 0.7 version and it might even contribute to the qwikioffice web desktop after all, albeit indirectly via the open source idea

Sure they were working on features, but I had fun doing it myself. Open source, or 'free software' is about freedom. I have a different direction I want to take the desktop, and that's enough to fork it.

Why not contribute to the qwikioffice community versus making some changes and starting a direct competitor (I have heard rumors about different back ends being developed and contributed to the community)?

That was a decision I made early on. I don't use php and don't want anything to do with it. I am contributing by releasing it, just not in the form of direct patches. They can take what they need from it.

Either way, I am looking forward to seeing the modified backend. What modifications to the backend have been made? When will the Comet source code be available? I don't know much about Perl...what are the advantages?

The php backend was was thrown out. I rewrote it all in perl. The source will be available for download this weekend on the Comet Desktop project page (http://code.google.com/p/cometdesktop/). You can also find a more deailed list of features there.

There are many benefits of using Comet Desktop. It can take advantage of fast cgi and mod_perl for speed. None of my sql queries are injectable. Perl plugins for desktop modules are easier to write. Perl has a rich open source community, and Perl hackers prefer to run Perl based apps.

Trying to make a quick name for myself? Hardly. I'm not forking it to take credit for anyone's work. I'm simply following the guidelines of forking a GPL v3 project. Some of which are: changing the name, putting notices of it being a forked project in the license, preserving the copyright headers of the forked project, etc.

I am making a long term commitment to Comet Desktop. Even if a few people loyal to qWiki are bitter.

xantus,

Just my opinion.

I released qWikiOffice open source for the purpose of allowing other developers to use it to launch their open source web apps. Not so someone else could just take my code and call it "their" web desktop.

I released qWikiOffice because as far as I knew, Ext JS had/has no intention of continuing development of their original desktop demo (which I was happy to contribute my Start Menu and Taskbar code to). If they had I wouldn't have released qWikiOffice.

Question.

Just wondering why your post (http://extjs.com/forum/showthread.php?p=256901#post256901) originally did not state that it was a fork of qWikiOffice?

It also originally stated that comet desktop was available commercially.

xantus,

Just my opinion.

I released qWikiOffice open source for the purpose of allowing other developers to use it to launch their open source web apps. Not so someone else could just take my code and call it "their" web desktop.

I forgot to mentioned it was a fork, but I fixed that. Sorry.
I originally sought to use it commercially, but you didn't reply to my emails about an OEM license. So I retracted the note about it being available commercially after I released it.

The GPL allows me the freedom to fork your project. I prefer to be civil about it and collaborate and share code. It's up to you.

I'm glad you all feel it necessary to argue about the open source license of a particular application in a thread that has nothing to do with that. As far as I know, as long as Xantus is following the license agreement, the rest of you can get off his back. You don't want your code used a certain way, don't release it. Regardless, I would prefer that this thread return to its original purpose.

Just my two cents.

No offense, but when someone takes my open source code and states that they are going to use it in their commercial project (as his post originally stated... since changed). I will post asking about it.

This is my 2nd and final post here.

These implementations are looking good, and obviously show good Javascript skills, and a good knowledge of Ext.

But they should use YSLOW.

sonatype.org has 48 javascript files loaded seperately. A+ for gzipping them, but what about yuicompressor?

Released javascript should be concatenated up into one file, yuicompressed, and then served gzipped.

Bastard botnet cyber criminals are using Ext! This makes me go all killy.

The BBC's technology programme, "Click" just did a feature on botnets, and showed how easy it was to buy a botnet, and how easy the UI was to use. And guess what? The UI was Ext.

I took some screenshots from the hi res version on their iPlayer site (Only available in the UK).

Hey guys, the CCA (Canadian Center for Architecture) (http://cca.qc.ca/) has been out for a while now and some of you may have had a look at it already. This is a project I worked on, and a lot of EXT JS was used. All over the front-end there are dataviews and some fairly complex layouts (see search and browse) that we did. We also made a couple of custom paging tools for the same. The backend - which you can't see - ;) uses waaay more EXTJS and is pretty sweet too. Anyway, we're looking for some expert feedback on the site so feel free to rant or rave about it, I'd welcome any kind of input, especially from experienced EXT users. We're pretty proud of the site but if you see a glaring mistake of any kind fire back at me. On another note, we also used some other technologies that some of you may be interested in, namely liquid for templates, sifr (mixed with some EXT goodness) for custom fonts, and of course Rails for handling it all. A not too shabby CMS is the result. So yeah, let me know what you think and feel free to ask any questions! Thanks!

I have created Dracones, a web mapping framework for MapServer, an open source GIS software. To show what's being possible with the framework, I have also created DraconesPH, a public health surveillance application, built upon Dracones, but featuring a completely decoupled UI.

This UI is actually built with Ext JS. I wouldn't dare to think that it's a totally professional Ext program, as learning Ext, from my perspective, has been a continuous learning experience (with the help of both the excellent documentation and user forum), but I think it presents some interesting features, namely the binding of an Ext application layout to an external mapping library. I've been a firm Ext believer for some time now, as I think that it is, by very far, the best JavaScript UI framework available.

Since my projects are such a specialized products, it's been hard for me to find relevant places to announce my work. I only posted to a few mailing lists, and an open source geospatial blog or two as well.

But then today I thought that maybe the Ext community might be interested by such a project. If you want, you can then take a look at the Dracones framework site (not using Ext):

http://surveillance.mcgill.ca/dracones

and also the DraconesPH application site (using it):

http://surveillance.mcgill.ca/dracones/draconesph/index.php

Here is a quick snapshot showing what DraconesPH looks like:

The company I work for, TraCorp, produces custom online training courses. We've had our own learning management system (LMS) for several years, but about 2 years ago with customer funding we were able to redesign and start rewriting LMS7 from scratch, and I used ExtJS for literally the entire interface, for both students and admins. 2 years of design and development and a total of about 1.2MB of (minified) Javascript code later, we've got about 15 clients using the new version so far, with another 5 or 6 which we still need to move over from the old version.

We've got a description page up on our site, but sadly no publicly-available demo yet:

http://www.tracorp.com/tracorpLMS.php

Our largest installation so far has over 87,000 registered users, and it has delivered over 256,600 hours of tracked training to its 79,000 students, with over 100 online courses offered (in addition to registration for classroom courses, webinars, untracked training, online tests, etc).

Clients using this system include Honeywell, Avis/Budget Group, Choice Hotels International, PriceWaterhouseCoopers, and the US military.

I have created WEB UML using extjs and raphael.js(http://raphaeljs.com/). I use it to help developing my WEB ERP system.
In my web erp, almost all the business logics and form syntaxs are stored in database and created dynamically just when erp call them.
When they were called, they would store in Ext stores and would not be called repeatedly.
And all my form syntaxs came from PowerBuilder datawindow UI automatically.
Because all projects can share the same web erp system, the erp system size is small.

Please use Chrome or FF or Safari but not IE to test. You can pass the login window and open or search umlID directly.
Thank you.

The underneath are Chinese words.

Good Job.

Daz
30 May 2010, 5:56 PM
The vector overlays are using encoded polylines/polygons (compressed format of ASCII characters) rather than KML files.

The reason we chose encoded polylines is we're mapping many large GIS files (up to 100s Megs in size with accuracy down to the street level). Combined with only serving what's required for the screen - the content from large GIS files can be displayed online in Google Maps in seconds.

If anyone is interested, we have created our site www.astracore.com using grails, ExtJS (Sencha) and Sencha Touch running on Amazon Ec2, RDS see:
www.astracore.com (http://www.astracore.com/)

You will need a webkit style browser (eg safari, chrome, iPhone or Android) if you choose "Mobile Login", you will also need these credentials:
user: user1@xyzabc.com
password: test

I note that the mobile interface is still very flakey especially on HTC Android. Hoping the next release of Sencha Touch helps.

Not sure how to post this on the examples wiki as it would not let me edit.

Hi Jamie,

I would like to share the application I just delivered to ABN AMRO Bank but I can't edit the sightings page. I don't know if the wiki is still used. Would you find it interesting to learn how ABN AMRO Bank uses ExtJS?

A portable ExtJS application for Windows http://daat.lazysysadmin.com/.

It provides cross-platform system administration automations and log file transformations.

I don't seem to have the ability to edit the wiki page, but I stumbled across this page (http://nationalbridges.com/) today when searching for info on a particular bridge.

Entrust, a digital certificate supplier in North America use Ext to provide a grid interface for client certificate management. I can't provide a link as it requires account and authentication.

An application builder which produces Sencha rendered templates, you should check it out http://appflower.com/ :-)

AppFlower automatically generates backend and frontend, so it leaves you without the need to do any coding. Just click and build. It supports most of the Sencha features out of the box. And you can add custom code where-ever needed (on all levels, the engine is open-sourced). The backend is constructed on top of the well-known php framework, Symfony.

You can also checkout one of the videos from the appFlower channel http://vimeo.com/channels/appflower

Let us know what you think. Uploaded a few screenshots, one of an application build on top of appFlower and the others from the Visual Designer in AppFlower Studio. All utilizing Sencha

I like the idea. Getting started on a new project can get tedious. As long as you have full control over your app once the foundation is create, this would be a great tool.

Several items:
Do you plan to create a VirtualBox VM? I do not have VMWare installed and not sure if I want to install it just to look at AppFlower.

Do you have any online demo app created with AppFlower so we can see how it performs?

Also, your online videos are a bit fast. I felt like you were in a hurry. I would like to see what is happening. Having used Camtasia several times, this is the complaint I received the most on my first videos. <bg>

Scott.

This weekend I was looking at the idea of moving from CodeIgniter to Symfony. I am curious as to why you selected v1.4 instead of Symfony2?

Are there plans to change this as well as supporting ExtSJ4 when it becomes stable?

Regards,
Scott.

Hi Scott,

Hehe.. okay, we will make the videos a bit slower. I guess, when you are familiarly with what's happening you like to see it a bit faster :-) And thanks for letting us know about the Video link, i have now added the Virtualbox plus some of the other installation videos to appflower channel on vimeo. Then it should be easier for others as well to find these tutorials. You should also have a look at our learning center where you can find more ressources, which you probably already did find. http://www.appflower.com/cms/learningcenter

We are using ExtJS 3.x and Symfony v1.x, since that was what were available when we started to develop the AppFlower Engine. And most importantly we have tested this in the wild, and marked it stable. And using complex views in Sencha, under different scenarios you still need to test it :-) This doesn't mean we don't like Sencha 4.x, we are going to implement these as well, together with other template rendering options. And the same goes for Symfony, then at the time of we started to develop AppFlower Engine. Symfony was in very early versions, and then we slowly have upgraded together with their releases of the 1.x series. Symfony v2.0 is a big re-write. And we will be needing to do some re-writes as well, to have it fit Symfony v2.0. This is also something we are looking into now that we have finalized and released AppFlower Studio. The nice part is that when we upgrade to newer version of Sencha or Symfony, you don't need to do a bunch of re-writing, since it's abstracted.

So basically many improvements and new surprises i believe you would like is on it's way. Most important like Sencha, and Symfony. We are driven by the community. So let us know if you miss something.. and we will look into it.

We have an online demo server, where you can try to build you own app and test the performance of both the web-based IDE environment, and also the app you make. Just send us your email, and we will sign you up (it's free, no worries). I believe shortly we will also provide other online demo applications, like seedcontrol. Which is available on the vm-image you have downloaded.

Are you referring to the video showing

No. You can get a free online account to play around with appFlower. I will create an instance for you, and send it over.
