Maybe the difference is that I already have the GridPanel in a window and I want to open an additional window. The 2nd window gets placed behind the first.
I believe that is what I'm doing. I have a listener on the gridpanel that when a row is selected, it calls a method that both creates a new window and then calls the show() method on that new window.
I am having the exact same problem. On the selection of the gridpanel row I show a new window and then call the toFront() method on it but nothing appears to change.
