I had my wife check the test page (on a MBP) and it works properly!

I'm more convinced this is a regression.
The above test works properly on Safari 4.0.4 and the latest Chrome beta (5.0.307.7).

e.stopEvent is simply ignored, and found quite a few, but nothing exactly like this.

I just found this bug yesterday. It's been so long since FF and IE disagreed w/in Ext that I was sure it was me ...
Luckily, in my case, the trigger needn't be hidden :)

The problem with the latter approach will be scope.
If you are wrapping your app in an onReady anonymous function (which you should be),
logout() will not be found at time of invocation... -

You will have to adapt the TreeNodeUI to process your data,
and plug in the desired links. Check out the column tree example
to see how each "row" is actually assembled and it should be clear.

While I certainly agree that the Ext docs are superior (like you I'm amazed at the grousing), this doesn't make sense.
With a reasonable index, client-side searching would be quite tractable.
