Not sure about what application do you talk. e4ds-template or the starter-app?
e4ds-template ist the one on e4ds.rasc.ch

If you get a 404 then most of the time there is an error during startup. Do you see some stacktrackes in the output?

I'm talking about the ralscha-e4ds-template sample app. I downloaded the source as zip and am trying to run it. Here's my console output when starting. I don't see any exceptions or stack traces:

Looks fine.
I also downloaded the zip and run mvn tomcat7:run and then went to http://localhost:8080
It works on my machine. I have no clue what could be wrong with your installation.

Sorry if it's just me, but I'm still a little stumped. Just want to verify that it is the zip off this page I should be getting: https://github.com/ralscha/e4ds-template

and that no other steps are required? I don't see any index.html or index.jsp file in there that should be in the context root and the web.xml seems to only have the DefaultServlet registered. Also, it looks like the extjs folder isn't there but has a 'Replace with ExtJS' or something like that. Are there some common-sense steps I'm missing?

This is the zip I downloaded: ralscha-e4ds-template-extjs-4.0.7-50-g09ab893.zip and it's 141kb.

Ok - problem solved. I'm almost too embarrassed to say what the problem was, but I don't want to leave you curious. I just had a tomcat instance working in Eclipse that already had the port opened. There were no error messages upon starting up the demo so I didn't realize.

Thanks for the feedback. Maybe this is something we should report to the Apache Tomcat Maven Plugin guys. Would be nice if the plugin shows a error message "port is already in use".

If you are still looking for the html files they are in this folder: src\main\webapp\WEB-INF\jsp
The extjs folder is only needed if you want to use your own commercial licensed extjs or you want to use a different version. Right now, if you look inside index.jsp and login.jsp, both files point to the gpl version of extjs 4.0.7

Anyone have problem with Unicode characters?

I used Form-Post and everything was fine. Just found out today that my database contain some ugly characters eg. "ดกหดห".

On client side, using Firebug, the Post request is fine. no ugly chars.
On server side, method's parameters contain ugly chars.

I'm not sure this is something about Direct Spring's binding? Still trying to figure it out...

Hi. Is this a normal form or multipart form (with upload)?
Just found out that one of the demo applications (http://e4ds.rasc.ch/eds-starter-simple/) has the same problem with a multipart form.
But a normal form post works: http://eds.rasc.ch/demo/extjs41/form.html

Yes. I switched back from the StandardMultipartResolver to the CommonsMultipartResolver.
