Answered: Moving this forum to StackOverFlow?

I've used this forum for a couple of weeks now, and I must say that compared to StackOverFlow, it's really lacking. Most answers are quick pointers to somewhere in the docs and they're not really helpful. When I click on my profile, I can see that I've asked 10 questions, but I don't have the links to them. I understand that Sencha is not in the forum business and they shouldn't be dedicating much time to making this on par with SOF, but support is critical.

I do both native iOS and Android, and I feel like I could build two native apps in less time than one ST2 app simply because there's so much more support. Google moved their Android support to SOF, so this isn't unheard of. SOF has built an "economy" around getting people answers to their questions.

    Over 125,000 questions tagged: iphone:

  2. I would have to say I also would love a stackoverflow / stack exchange based Q & A forum. You would not have to dump the current forum.

I would have to agree with you on this one; however I think the stack exchange based site would make life easier for the community to better answer and find answers. Maybe it is something to poll the community about.

The stack exchange based site could save the Sencha staff time of working on a better search feature for the current forums... Just a thought.

Also the stack exchange setup is free.

I disagree. These are community forums so yes, Sencha is in no way required to answer things here. However, we care about the community and that is why my primary job is to patrol the forums. I do almost 4,000 posts a month on the forums so I would never say these forums are not active or as active as stackoverflow.

The issue comes that I believe help is better given, not flat out code. I want to help you all find answers for yourselves to make you better and allow you to understand the framework. Give a man a fish, feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, feed him for life.

I know you all want code and if you want that then purchase a support subscription and we will give you personalized support and do just that. On these forums, my mission is to get you all to understand the framework and learn how to find the answers yourselves. It's more work and more frustrating but should allow you to become a better Sencha developer in the long run.

I know this post is coming from your frustration about my posting a link to the API docs for Ext.Ajax.request because I wanted you to try to figure out how to do it.

I'm sure that you're doing an incredible amount of work. However, I
think your mileage would go farther on SOF. It's easier to point to
other questions, which means shouldn't have to repeatedly answer
beginner questions. You can also link related questions. Search is better.
The SOF software is simply superior. Plus you'd have a very high reputation by now. :-)

As for learning to fish, I've been fishing for 30 years. I'm relatively new to
Javascript and only about 1/3 of the way through Crockford. However,
I'm sure by the time I finish, I'll be drinking the kool-aid.

Finally, let me throw out a real example of how SOF is useful. I
asked this question with the better wiki:

    http://stackoverflow.com/questions/9...-in-a-tabpanel

Then I took the answer and placed it on my github account. I even
added the Sencha CDN so the next guy can check out the project and run
    it unmodified:

    https://github.com/melling/SenchaTouch2

Btw, notice how many iPhone examples I've gone through:

    https://github.com/melling/iPhone-Apps

There's nothing like learning from complete working code.
And yes, I've been over many of the examples that you ship.

Sencha (starting back form when it was called Ext JS) grew up on these forums also so throwing the forums away is not an option. We are discussing internally about upgrading the forums and top priority is better search.

Your decision. Just consider that even Google went with SOF. Only so many hours in a day...

    http://android-developers.blogspot.c...-overflow.html

I'd rather see Sencha spend more time on making an "optimized" version for people who use modern browsers. :-) IE6/IE7 are dead... almost... :-(

Ext JS supports IE6/7 so these forums will support it also, just a fact of life on that one. IE6/7 is still very much alive within enterprises and government so we can't shut them out. I too wish we could dump them but IE8/9 isn't all that much better either. WebKit browsers and Firefox are great but we can't ignore the fact that IE 6-9 are still part of everyday life.

We have a weekly meeting and we are in the planning phases of that. Of course the planning phase is slow and kind of boring but we have a couple hundred thousand users so we need to ensure our decisions on what to do is the right decision. We may even move to a new forum software but we have to make sure it fits our community as well as our needs.

In the next meeting, can you mention that in addition to Google, Facebook also uses StackOverFlow for support.

Looks good. Is there a way to more easily discover questions with great answers? I'd like to read through highly voted questions and answers. It's another way to learn.
