Unanswered: How to get column's sortType from sortchange event?

I have a custom function for grid's sortchange event. The dataIndex is easily accessible, but I need the column's sortType also. I'm totally lost on how to access this, so could anyone help me here?

Isn't the sortType on the field in the Model not the column?

Yes it is, and that is the problem. I assume this is impossible, then?
