How to use refs from a controller in Architect and Touch 2.1

In the attached example I am trying to set the html property of a panel, but it seems that I am not able to get a reference to the panel from my controller. Could somebody look at the attachment and let me know what I am doing wrong?

I should have been using a syntax like this

var panel = this.getPanel();
panel.setHtml('some html');

in my MyController.calculateGrades code
