2 grid questions

I have 2 questions relating to grids.

1. Assume I have 3 columns. I'd like column 2 to be a vertical, blank divider column between columns 1 and 3. I've made the middle column (column 2) have a heading of " " and a width of 20. How can I color the empty cells of column 2 so the 'divider' stands out?

2. What config option would I use to allow a single rowS to be selected (using CTL key) or multiple rows to be selected (using the shift key)?
