Answered: Do Mac/Windows/Linux versions need separate licenses?

I'm considering to buy the license of Sencha Desktop Packager, but I have a question, I may want to package different binaries for my Mac/Windows/ or Linux users. If I would buy only one license, can I use this license for all platforms, or only one chosen at the buy time? Thanks.

  2. Your packages can run on as many platforms as you wish -- doesn't matter. The license grant is for the machine you *run* the packager on. So, if you're building from a Mac for Mac, Win, and Linux, you only need once license (since you're building on one machine). Or in another example, if you have a dev box (Windows) and a build machine (Linux), and are building for Mac, Win, and Linux, you would need two (since the packager is running on two machines).

    Hope that helps.

How can we build from one Mac machine a Win / Linux app?
If I try to build from Mac I get only one package for MacOS.
Is there any argument to pass to ionpackage during the building process? (something like --os=win)

    Thank you

Sorry, I overspoke on that point a little bit :-) cross-platform packaging isn't supported yet.

OK, so let's go back to my question. Let's say I have a Mac as my main workstation. And I have some Win/Linux in my Parallels virtual machines. So now the question is:
1, Can I build different binaries for different platform with my only license?
    2, If "Yes" is the answer to the first question, then no further questions;
3, Else if "No" is the answer to the first question, then would you recommend us to buy one license for each platform? Or wait until cross-platform packaging is supported?

    Thank you.

    2, If "Yes" ...
    3, Else if "No"...
    +1 for the if/else if
I would put a "while(notAnswer) do not use" just to be sure

Anyway in my opinion you should sell the license per developer, in these days even a single developer has at least 1 windows and 1 Mac/linux machine/virtual machine. Of course this is just my opinion!

    Thank you

@elgs: right now, you would need once license per machine, so if you had your Mac workstation, and two VMs (Win and Lin) and wanted to package for each platform from each "operating system image", you right now would need three licenses. Multi-platform builds is on the roadmap but if you have an immediate need, you would need three -- the choice is up to you if you want to wait for the feature or buy the extra licenses. Not the best best answer, obviously :-), but hopefully give you clarity.

@hyperionab: thanks for the clarification. So is the cross-platform packaging on the roadmap now? Thank you.

Yes, it's on the roadmap. No commitment to which version/etc, but it's a feature that's on the SDP roadmap.
