    Default Pre-sale question

    Pre-sale question

    Hello,
we are new to Sencha and we would like to have some info from some developer more expert then us.

We are planning to re-write an existing PHP web application that needs to run both on desktop and on mobile (at least iOS + Android). We are planning to use Sencha Ext JS + Touch with PHP

    Now some questions:

    1) I understood that Sencha Ext JS is used for desktop app, instead Sencha Touch is used for mobile app; is it right?

    2) If I initially write the desktop version of the application with Ext JS; how much is then the effort to move the application also to mobile with Sencha Touch?

    3) Does the "Sencha Cmd" in Sencha Touch produce an mobile "app" so that it will not run in a mobile browser but as a native mobile app? So may I write the code one time and then "compile" it for example for both iPad and Android obtaining two different apps for the 2 environment?

    Thanks and regards,
    Matt

Yes, this is correct - Sencha Ext JS is for producing desktop web apps that run across all the major browsers: IE6+, Firefox 3.6+, Safari 4+, Chrome 10+ and Opera 11+.
Sencha Touch is for mobile, and allows you to create web apps that run on iOS 4+, BlackBerry OS 6+, Android 2.3+ and Windows Phone 8 (in beta).

If I initially write the desktop version of the application with Ext JS; how much is then the effort to move the application also to mobile with Sencha Touch?
The codebase is very similar between Sencha Touch and Ext JS, but there are still lots of small differences. The main area that's different is the Views (the UI components). Models and Stores are very similar. So you'd be able to re-use some of the code, but it would need tweaking in places.

Does the "Sencha Cmd" in Sencha Touch produce an mobile "app" so that it will not run in a mobile browser but as a native mobile app? So may I write the code one time and then "compile" it for example for both iPad and Android obtaining two different apps for the 2 environment?
Sencha Cmd (http://www.sencha.com/blog/all-new-sencha-cmd/) includes the Sencha Mobile Packager. This would allow you to package your Sencha Touch app as a native app for both Android and iOS, whereby your web app would run in a native shell, and would have access to additional device APIs.

    Hope that helps.
