I'm new to Ext so bear with me. I'm trying to modify the value of an <input> element with the user's choice from a LayoutDialog window. The LayoutDialog displays with no problem. How do I 'return' the user's choice to the originating page? I've tried calling a function from the onclick event on the <input> tag within the window's HTML - the function below named 'updtaxrate'. I get an error saying the elements I'm trying to update 'have no objects'. Is this a scope issue? Thoughts?

Code:
selTaxRate : function(state, effdate, cvgtype, transseq) {
		//alert( "state=" + state );

            if(!taxseldlg) { // lazy initialize the dialog and only create it once
				taxseldlg = new Ext.LayoutDialog("taxdialog", {
								modal:true,
								width:440,
								height:350,
								shadow:false,
								minWidth:440,
								minHeight:350,
								proxyDrag: true,
								//shim: true,
								//y: 100,
								//x: 400,
					   center: {
								autoScroll:true
							   }
                		});
				taxseldlg.addKeyListener(27, taxseldlg.hide, taxseldlg);
				taxseldlg.addButton('Select', taxseldlg.hide, taxseldlg);

				var layout = taxseldlg.getLayout();
				taxseldlg.beginUpdate();
				var newlay = new Ext.ContentPanel('centertax', {title: 'Inner Tab', autoScroll:true });
				layout.add('center', newlay);
				taxseldlg.endUpdate();

		  	}
			var mgr = Ext.get('centertax').getUpdateManager();
			mgr.update({
				url: 'findsttax?task=',
				params: 'state='+state+'&effdate='+effdate+'&cvgtype='+cvgtype+'&transseq='+transseq
			});
			var seltext = "Select " + state + " Tax Rate";
			taxseldlg.setTitle(seltext);
			taxseldlg.show();
			taxseldlg.getEl("taxdialog").appendTo(document.body);
        }

};
}();

function updtaxrate(stefdt, stcvtp, transseq)
{
	var w_stefdt = "stefdt" + transseq;
	var w_stcvtp = "stcvtp" + transseq;
	//Ext.get(w_stcvtp).dom.value = stcvtp;
	//Ext.get(w_stefdt).dom.value = stefdt;
	//document.getElementById('stefdt004').value = stefdt;
	//document.getElementById('stcvtp004').value = stcvtp;
}
