View Full Version : Master-Detail Grid (grid within a grid)?

I'd like to have a grid row (master record) expand to another grid of detail records. The grid would work similar to the TreeGrid with the exception you would have different column headings for the detail records.

Has anyone built a grid that works this way?

Don't know they support this, but you could check SubTableRowExpander and/or MaximGB's TreeGrid.

These extensions assume the column headings are the same for the master grid and the expanded section.

One solution is creating a master grid panel and a details grid panel in a split panel. As the user clicks on a master record, the detail records would show below in the details panel.

I think it would be better for the user to hit the expand button to see the detail records. I'm not the first person to ask about this capability so I think there is some demand. I just don't have the skills to tackle an extension like this.

I'm not sure if the user is going to be happy with a grid in a grid. As single grid can be confusing enough for some users. Use a popup window (http://dev.sencha.com/deploy/dev/docs/?class=Ext.Window) instead for viewing details or a data tip (http://www.sencha.com/forum/showthread.php?93905-OPEN-705-Built-in-dynamic-ToolTips-on-all-data-backed-widgets) that shows on mouseover.
