View Full Version : Anti-spam measures

The spammers invading what should be a nice, quiet, geeky technical backwater make me sick. We need to weed them out.
Ajaxian now operate a scheme where to post, you type in the answer to some trivial techy question. Trivial to the intended audience and to bona-fide posters, but baffling to cretinous spammers.
Can we operate a scheme like that here? All you would need would be a random selection of 10 or so questions like,
"What does the second 'a' in Ajax stand for".
 oooh! That'll learn em... so difficult!
It wouldn't even slow regular posters down much.

The plan is to one day finish the forum2 interface which would stop them all together. In the meantime, I will look at some kind of anti-spam questions.. it could be very simple.

What do you think of my antispam feature? Let's see how long it works.

So, it's programs posting HTTP requests to the site is it? Not people logging in and writing that $hiite? Hopefully, it will keep them from bothering us all.

Yes, they are spam programs. Some will be human spammers, but those are pretty hard to stop.
FYI: This forum has also spam in it.

Thanks, they're banned. Please report them wherever you see them.
i just found them because they have "birthday" today. But you could probably find more of them by searching for a 20-alnum-digit ICQ name in the members list.
Another way to spot them: they don't post, they are just registering as a user: http://extjs.com/forum/memberlist.php?do=getall&pp=100&order=asc&sort=username&postsupper=1 and they probably use the vBulletin interface to register as user. As far as i can tell, ext uses another user-database so you could try to find all user that are in the vBulletin-userdatabase and not in the Ext-userdatabase. And delete/move the PHP files that vBulletin uses to register users.

I don't run the site, so I can't do that. It looks like it would be a good idea to just outright delete all users with a post count of zero.
A very few bona fide new posters might be caught out, but they could register again.
yes, i think that would be a feasible thing to do. whoever does this just should take care not do delete Premium Members with a post-count of 0.

i just banned one who's slightly smarter than that:
Probably I am unlucky or something with forum2 today..
Now I have found that after dragging the horizontal splitting bar the 1st time it really stops working in IE6. It works only after the fresh load of the whole UI. After the 1st attempt of dragging it, it stops functioning.
Can you confirm whether you have the same effect in IE6 or not?
Hello everyone ,I am newbie here. nice to meet you!
