ComboBox with icons

Hello I am tring to create a combobox with icons. The problem is, the drop down list supports html tags but the combobox field does not.

I have made smt like attachment with setting display field
mu3.gif <img ALIGN=RIGHT src="/eMOVEWeb/icons/mu3.gif" height="16" />But IE does not render the combox as I expected. (Also at attached) IE shifts the icons down.
How can I fix this is there a combobox display field renderer or smt like that?

edit: just noticed the links above lead to exactly your usecase (watched the titles only). so, you should read them, they are still up to date!

a better approach would be to change the template (tpl-config) of the combo.
i did something similar with sakis lovCombo in Ext2:
