View Full Version : Patterns For Dealing With Nested List Items that Navigate to Mutiple Places
I have what I don't believe is a unique situation but perhaps it is and have been thinking how to best handle it in terms of ease of user experience and implementation. I am using a nested list to display a tree of category names. By default when a category is tapped the child categories will be brought up in a list (default nested list behavior). However, I also need a way for the user to interact with a list item which would send them to another page for all categories not limited to leafs. Has anyone else dealt with this issue and if so what is the best method to handle it – multiple buttons, slide vs. tap gesture (surely needs some type of prompt to explain to user), etc?

There's an interesting and very smooth nested list demo using XML and AJAX you can download at www.iphoneaccordionmenu.com (http://www.iphoneaccordionmenu.com) . I haven't had time to fully look into how it's being done.
I ended up using single tap as is to handle revealing child items and double tap to carry out another action. Seems to work pretty well only need some type of visual indicator for the user. It did require some customization of the nested list due to the single tap event not being suppressed on a double tap. Though other than that seems to be just what is needed.
