I believe that when you design a user interface you should understand what it can do and how you can interact with it by simply looking at it. I have a situation where I have a Tree Grid on the left and a Grid of items on the right. A user can drag and drop an item from the Grid onto any location on the Tree Grid. Without doing a mouse-over how do you indicate that this particular screen supports drag-drop? Icons?

We're not doing a lot of drag and drop at the moment, mostly in administrative applications. But, if I introduce drag and drop to our user community I want it to seem apparent. I DO NOT want to add instructional text above the Grid as I may have menu buttons in the toolbar.

Ideas?

I am not aware of any symbol that denotes DnD support, so it would have to be text, or a help button tooltip, or something of that nature.

Users are pretty quick to check if DnD support is present.
