Can anyone please tell me why I don't see the text 'HELLO WORLD' appear in the North area of this Layout.

Thanks.

Only Containers can have child items.

thenewmexican
26 Jul 2009, 7:34 AM
Hey Evan. Thanks for the quick reply.

So. What in that hierarchy is NOT a container.

ViewPort
BoxComponent
FormPanel
SomeText.

Read the docs: http://extjs.com/deploy/dev/docs/?class=Ext.BoxComponent

thenewmexican

Now. I'm confused.

If you look at the code from that same example you have this.

{
// lazily created panel (xtype:'panel' is default)
region: 'south',
contentEl: 'south',
split: true,
height: 100,
minSize: 100,
maxSize: 200,
collapsible: true,
title: 'South',
margins: '0 0 0 0'
}, {
region: 'east',
title: 'East Side',
collapsible: true,
split: true,
width: 225, // give east and west regions a width
minSize: 175,
maxSize: 400,
margins: '0 5 0 0',
layout: 'fit', // specify layout manager for items
items: // this TabPanel is wrapped by another Panel so the title will be applied
new Ext.TabPanel({
border: false, // already wrapped so don't add another border
activeTab: 1, // second tab initially active
tabPosition: 'bottom',
items: [{
html: '<p>A TabPanel component can be a region.</p>',
title: 'A Tab',
autoScroll: true
}, new Ext.grid.PropertyGrid({
title: 'Property Grid',
closable: true,
source: {
"(name)": "Properties Grid",
"grouping": false,
"autoFitColumns": true,
"productionQuality": false,
"created": new Date(Date.parse('10/15/2006')),
"tested": false,
"version": 0.01,
"borderWidth": 1
}
})]
})
}

In this case you have a TabPanel, contained inside a PropertyGrid. Everything works fine.
So. Again. You have a hierarchy that looks like this.

ViewPort
BoxComponent
TabPanel
PropertyGrid

How is that any different from
ViewPort
BoxComponent
FormPanel

Where is the hierarchy violated with respect to containment

evant
26 Jul 2009, 7:53 AM
Not correct. The default xtype is panel, so if you don't specify one, a panel is created. The hierarchy is:

ViewPort
Panel
TabPanel
PropertyGrid

thenewmexican

So. You telling me that a FormPanel cannot be a child of BoxComponent ??

evant
26 Jul 2009, 8:00 AM
Yes. I suggest you check out the documentation, note there's not an items config option for the BoxComponent!

thenewmexican
26 Jul 2009, 8:07 AM
What is this code all about then.

region: 'east',
title: 'East Side',
collapsible: true,
split: true,
width: 225, // give east and west regions a width
minSize: 175,
maxSize: 400,
margins: '0 5 0 0',
layout: 'fit', // specify layout manager for items
items: // this TabPanel is wrapped by another Panel so the title will be applied
new Ext.TabPanel({
border: false, // already wrapped so don't add another border
activeTab: 1, // second tab initially active
tabPosition: 'bottom',
items: [{
html: '<p>A TabPanel component can be a region.</p>',
title: 'A Tab',
autoScroll: true
}, new Ext.grid.PropertyGrid({
title: 'Property Grid',
closable: true,
source: {
"(name)": "Properties Grid",
"grouping": false,
"autoFitColumns": true,
"productionQuality": false,
"created": new Date(Date.parse('10/15/2006')),
"tested": false,
"version": 0.01,
"borderWidth": 1
}
})]
})

There appears to be an items: config tag for the east region.

mjlecomte
26 Jul 2009, 8:10 AM
Because the defaultType is a 'panel'. See the discussion at top here:
http://extjs.com/deploy/ext-3.0.0/docs/?class=Ext.layout.BorderLayout

mjlecomte
26 Jul 2009, 8:12 AM
These are the same:

{
region: 'east',
title: 'East Side',
collapsible: true,
...

{
xtype: 'panel',
region: 'east',
title: 'East Side',
collapsible: true,
...

thenewmexican

Forgive me if I act completely confused. But. I am.

How is this

items : [
new Ext.form.FormPanel({
baseCls: 'x-plain',
layout:'absolute',
defaultType: 'textfield',

items: [{
x: 0,
y: 5,
xtype:'label',
text: 'Send To:'
}
]

})
]

Any different from this:

items: // this TabPanel is wrapped by another Panel so the title will be applied
new Ext.TabPanel({
border: false, // already wrapped so don't add another border
activeTab: 1, // second tab initially active
tabPosition: 'bottom',
items: [{
html: '<p>A TabPanel component can be a region.</p>',
title: 'A Tab',
autoScroll: true
}, new Ext.grid.PropertyGrid({
title: 'Property Grid',
closable: true,
source: {
"(name)": "Properties Grid",
"grouping": false,
"autoFitColumns": true,
"productionQuality": false,
"created": new Date(Date.parse('10/15/2006')),
"tested": false,
"version": 0.01,
"borderWidth": 1
}
})]

I'm just not seeing the difference. Other than in one context a TabPanel is being used.
I the latter. A FormPanel is being used.

Come someone please help with the HUH, that is stuck in my frontal lobes

evant

You're not understanding.

{
// lazily created panel (xtype:'panel' is default)

}, {
//NO XTYPE SPECIFIED, SO THIS ITEM HERE IS A PANEL, WHICH EXTENDS CONTAINER
region: 'east',
title: 'East Side',
collapsible: true,
split: true,
width: 225, // give east and west regions a width
minSize: 175,
maxSize: 400,
margins: '0 5 0 0',
layout: 'fit', // specify layout manager for items
items: // this TabPanel is wrapped by another Panel so the title will be applied
new Ext.TabPanel({

}
})]
})
}

mjlecomte

You had this:

var viewport = new Ext.Viewport({
layout: 'border',
items: [
new Ext.BoxComponent({
region: 'north',
height: 70, // give north and south regions a height
items : [
new Ext.form.FormPanel({
text: 'HELLO WORLD:' ,
...
}
]
})
]

A BoxComponent is NOT a Container. You will not find a config option for "items" in the docs for BoxComponent.

This would work:

var viewport = new Ext.Viewport({
layout: 'border',
items: [
new Ext.Panel({
region: 'north',
height: 70, // give north and south regions a height
items : [
new Ext.form.FormPanel({
text: 'HELLO WORLD:' ,
...
}
]
})
]

thenewmexican
26 Jul 2009, 8:53 AM
Still does not produce any text in the north area using

var viewport = new Ext.Viewport({

layout: 'border',
items: [
// create instance immediately
new Ext.Panel({
region: 'north',
height: 70, // give north and south regions a height
items : [
new Ext.form.FormPanel({
baseCls: 'x-plain',
layout:'absolute',
defaultType: 'textfield',

items: [{
x: 0,
y: 5,
xtype:'label',
text: 'HELLO WORLD:'
}
]

})
]

But. I really, really, appreciate the help.

Evan.
How do you guys do your testing.

Because it appears, that, the hierarchy I'm attempting, was not a scenario that your group anticipated.

mjlecomte

I see HELLO WORLD: in the north region using this:

<html>
<head>
<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=utf-8">

<title>Viewport Test</title>

<link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="../../resources/css/ext-all.css" />

<script type="text/javascript" src="../../adapter/ext/ext-base.js"></script>
<script type="text/javascript" src="../..//ext-all-debug.js"></script>

<script type="text/javascript">
Ext.BLANK_IMAGE_URL = '../../resources/images/default/s.gif';

Ext.onReady(function(){
var viewport = new Ext.Viewport({
layout: 'border',
items: [
new Ext.Panel({
region: 'north',
height: 70,
layout: 'fit',
items: [
new Ext.form.FormPanel({
baseCls: 'x-plain',
layout: 'absolute',
items: [
{
xtype: 'label',
x: 0, y: 5,
text: 'HELLO WORLD:'
}
]
})
]
}), {
region: 'center'
}
]
});
});
</script>
</head>
<body>
</body>
</html>

Thanks. I'll try that.
This toolkit has big upside. I just need to really get into. I'm coming from a Java and Smalltalk background.

So. JS. Is pretty challenging for me right now

If "javascript" is your glitch, you may want to look up the screencasts by Douglas Crockford in YUI Theatre, or his book "Javascript: The Good Parts" to get the skinny on javascript. I think some of the content of that book you can find on his website even.
