Can anyone tell me what happened to initComponent? Looks like the relevant lines in ext-all.js have been commented out. Yet there's no remark on this in the change log.

initComponent isn't commented out! It still works like before.

ps. However, Ext 3 does offer an easier way to override the constructor, which IMHO is preferred over overriding initComponent.

Ah, right. Sorry, I was mixing up ext-all.js and adapter/ext/ext-base.js

However, I cant find initComponent in the 3.0 docs (http://extjs.com/deploy/dev/docs/)...?

You should report that in the missing docs thread (it's marked protected, but it should still be in the API docs).

private / protected members aren't included in the API docs at this point. Might be good some day to add a toggle to the API GUI that allows switching on/off private/protected.

None of the template methods are documented in this way.
