I figured it out! It's daylight savings time stuffing it up. As far as Safari is concerned, 1 October 1950 00:00:00 doesn't exist. This is obviously incorrect behaviour but is a result of crappy...
Interestingly, if I change the strict flag to false, it returns the following on Safari:
Mac Safari Version 7.0.6 (9537.78.2)
Not sure about iOS. It's whatever is bundled with iOS 7.1.2.
Are you not able to reproduce it?
Edit: Oh, and I'm not getting any errors in the console :)
The first is Safari (OS X)
The next is Chrome (OS X)
The issue was first reported on in independant iPad. I managed to reproduce it immediately on OS X (Mavericks)....
Hi, The date parse function appears to be busted on Safari. Tested on both Safari Mac and on iOS

I can confirm that this is indeed a bug. I too have come across it.
One way to bypass the issue is to force set filters and sorters in your Store's config:
