If you inspect the DOM of the tab that you set the badge text, you will see a new element created for the badge.

I am completely and totally lost.

What does the getactiveindex do? I thought it was returning the item number of the carousel.

yes but you didn't need to in the beforecardswitch event... you can do everything within the cardswitch event, get the index of the old tab or new tab and set the badge.

I originally had it at that, but I made a lot of changes to the listeners to see if that made any difference. Before I finally gave up and came to the experts.

    One last question,

Does your earlier example with the indexOf retrieve a kinda of a getactiveindex on the old card. Meaning I can determine if a user is swipeing/scrolling up/down/left/right based on the oldcard and newcard difference

Correct. What happened in that line is we got the inner items (leave the docked items out of this) and it returned a Ext.util.MixedCollection. Now we got the index of that class in the MixedCollection using indexOf. This will get the correct index regardless of if you are going forward, backward, or from the end to the start.
