Default Custom components: what are cachedConfig, eventedConfig, and template used for?

I am trying to port some of my custom components over to ST2. In the process I have been trying to learn by looking at core components like Button to see what the best practices are for creating components.

I am running into a few key things I see quite a bit that I can't find documented anywhere. Namely, what are cachedConfig, eventedConfig, and template.

It looks like they are nice building blocks for components but I am note quite sure how they should be used and when. Any pointers would be much appreciated.

Both cachedConfig and eventedConfig get applied onto the config object. cachedConfig is used by AbstractComponent and eventedConfig is used by Evented. This is to make certain things kind of private. template is an array to create child elements.
