Exclamation Is Sencha screwing single developers?

    Is Sencha screwing single developers?

A couple of years ago, I bought "Sencha Complete" when EXTJS4 was released. I was waiting indefinitely to some bug fixes, because 4.2.1(2?) had serious problems. The bug fixes never came. I had to stop development for other reasons, but then came back to my work, using ExtJS. No bug fixes for 4.2.1, so, impressed by newer features of EXTJS 5, I tried to forget about 4 and go directly to rebuild the work I had done. Now, contacting Sencha, I was told either I had to pay for the two consecutive years that I did not paid for the maintenance & support, or go directly to get a new Ext 5 license. Ok. In the few weeks I was trying ExtJS 5, first with the trial version, and then the GPL version (that I discovered is really striped down), I was trying to convince my small company to acquire a new license for 5, while checking Sencha's licensing options weekly, it went from:Single license, with no-support option for about 200~300 bucks, that was ok to me,then, they removed the "no support option", and it went up got $695.When I was almost ready to get the license, now there is only the option for "up to 5 users" , and the price climbed to $3,225.00.As a single developer I felt somehow "betrayed" , because, now I am stuck with "buggy Ext 4.2.2" and locked away from bug fixes, because the 4.2.3 bug fixes are for "support paying people" only. It's hard to not feel like a "Sencha Complete" . Any advice?ThanksSergio Sider

The only advice I can give is that any sales questions are to be handled by our sales department contactable at sales@sencha.com . You can also contact our product manager Gautam Agrawal at gautam@sencha.com. We also have a FAQ setup that you can visit here.

    Hi Sergio,

After reading your post I've opened the store page, and I couldn't believe my eyes, the single developer license option is gone.
I think they consider themself as big people now and don't want to mess anymore with "small" people.
    That's sad.

    Hi,

it were nice if we can have a official statement here... A 5-Developer Package is for a single developer to expensive.

If this is not a failure i must stop the development :-(

I would like a statement from the company also on this subject. I've sent the company a mail and suggest others do too as per an earlier recommendation. See what they say by tomorrow but its something which perhaps needs to be reblogged.

If Sencha is going to "do me over" as per this thread then I WILL jump ship as well.

Happy to pay fairly for products and services but there are other good platforms out there but I will be interested to know where people choose to go for their dev.

(As it happens the type of work I'm interested in would benefit from Shiva3D - which is less data focussed and more game engine so its not really a swap). Sad to say goodbye to Sencha though.

The thing that enrages me the most is the fact that I chose to buy the full package (thinking I was helping like I did with several other open-source projects that charged for support). I am not a "get code free and complain" type of developer. I could use the GPL version and I would be even ok with buggy software.Sencha was the only project that locked me away from bug fixes, because the bug fixes for version4 took about 2 years! And to get the bug fixes they said I had to pay 2 years of (inexistent and useless, because I didn't use it , *and* even if I did, the bugs were not fixed) support.Clearly Sencha is targeting the big companies, stepping in the heads of the ones who helped them get big in the first place.Just remember when all "small developers" are gone, you'll have to find other people to step over.

Default Solution buy Support for Sencha complete

Solution buy Support for Sencha complete

Since you bought Sencha Complete, you had 1 year of maintenance and support with Complete. To get new versions or fixes, all you need to do is renew your support for your license. Sencha is renewing support for all existing license holders that previously had support.

So is there an official statement on this license change? Is it really true that a small company can not purchase a new extjs development license for one developer?

    FAQ updated: http://www.sencha.com/support/faqs/

Typical 'extract more money from our customers more simply' nonsense'. Add my name to the list of solo developers looking to replace Sencha products...

Why is Sencha moving to only providing 5 Licenses and above?

Most of our end-users are software developers working in large, often geographically dispersed teams, and this approach to providing our products made the most sense for the vast majority of our customers and partners. This will simplify purchasing decisions and processing effort for everyone involved. Additionally, since our products are long-lived within the teams we service, it will lower everyone’s long-term license management and coordination costs when acquiring and renewing licenses or maintenance and support subscriptions.
