Default How to set request headers (Architect 3.2)

Within an AJAX store proxy, I've tried setting the request header via the "headers" property to:
    headers: 'Content-Type: application/json; charset=utf-8',
Unfortunately, this doesn't seem to be sent at all; how can I make this work?

Does it work if you configure 'headers' with an object?
