Ext JS + jQTouch + Raphaël = Sencha
Exciting things are happening! Today, we’re combining forces with the jQTouch and Raphaël projects, changing our company name to Sencha, and moving our web address from www.extjs.com to www.sencha.com.
jQTouch and Raphaël are the leading open source projects in their areas, and we’re incredibly excited to have their creators, David Kaneda and Dmitry Baranovskiy, joining with the Ext JS team to form Sencha. We believe these collaborations will lead to some spectacular new things in the weeks and months ahead. Stay tuned for this. You won’t have to wait too long, I promise!
We believe that rich graphics and touch support will become essential Ajax framework components over the next few years. If you’ve been following our recent blog posts on HTML5, you’ll know that not only do HTML5 and CSS3 bring significant capabilities to rich internet applications, but that this is already arriving on mobile devices (in fact, it’s already here).
Why Sencha?
We’re choosing Sencha as our name because it evokes next-generation software development and it’s easy to remember, spell and pronounce. Sencha — the name of a popular Japanese green tea — is in the tradition of Java, and represents a new level of development. It feels memorable to us. We hope you like it too.
The roadmaps for Ext JS, Ext GWT, Designer, Direct etc. don’t change as a result of this. We’re very excited about the new things in Ext JS 4.0 and the rest of the product line. Some of the individual product names might evolve in the future (for example, we’re thinking of renaming Ext Designer to Sencha Designer), but don’t expect any major or immediate changes here. One of the benefits of the name change is also that it separates a product name – Ext JS – from the company name, Sencha.
Raphaël and jQTouch will remain MIT licensed.
We’re setting up a foundation called Sencha Labs that will hold the copyright and trademarks for all the non-commercial projects affiliated with Sencha. Our license of choice for these projects is, and will continue to be, the MIT license. We will fund maintainers for our non-commercial projects with contributions from Sencha and the communities of these projects. We’re pleased to announce that Jonathan Stark, a well known mobile developer and the author of two O’Reilly books on Android and iPhone application development, will become the official maintainer for jQTouch going forward. (Welcome aboard, Jonathan!)

I can tell you that the name does not roll off the tongue. Also, there are many questions left for developers to ask. What is to remain of the Ext JS and Gxt frameworks?
The one benefit I see in moving to such a name is the loss of the confusion of “Ext” pronounciation, (Eck-ts, Eck-ts jay-ess, E-x-t, E-x-t J-S).

Wow! This is a nice surprise! Was going to start a new project using ExtJS, will be using this new one instead! ^_^
They specifically say in this post that the Ext JS product will not be affected by this. The confusion is that the company that “owned” Ext JS was *also* called Ext JS, so it’s only that which is changing, while Raphael and jQTouch are brought under this new banner.
My question is that I don’t understand how jQTouch can be integrated into future developments – it’s clearly based on jQuery and not Ext JS Core.

What does ExtJS have to do with jQTouch? Is there a link i’m currently unable to see? What will be the win-win for both?
The advantage for the Raphael/jqtouch guys is being on the ExtJS-company-payroll instead of relying on donations, I guess.
So, when can we expect a new charting system based on canvas and native js, instead of flash based? Sencha v.1.0 (ExtJS v.4.0)? ;)

I hope that we can now become independent of Flash. SVG standard has proven very powerful. Soon we will see applications made with sencha in iphone. It would be interesting to see something similar in android. However, it is too early to tell. I just hope to continue using a free license.

Good news! I’ve been enjoying the HTML5 articles and wondering what the next steps for ExtJS would be as the info-age is shifting towards more mobile modes of data access and communication.
I personally like the Sencha name… often I find in conversations about ExtJS with those not familiar with the framework that it is associated with core/foundation libraries like jQuery, Prototype.js, Mootools, etc. rather than more robust RIA component frameworks like YUI, SproutCore, Dojo, or SmartClient. A brand shift might actually improve that.

Surprising, might sound promising, but last night it was still Extjs, now Sencha, very confusing. I am not so fond of things changing overnight. I liked Extjs. I am not excited yet, maybe later. What happened to Jack Slocum? And I hope that your books are not printed yet, Jesus Garcia. I think you have change a thing or two.

Generally moving forward and combining powers, is a positive development but I have to agree with “jgarcia”. I wonder if this has any impact on the ExtJS’s source code too. For example If the word “Ext.Panel” is going to be replaced with “Sencha.Panel” which will break all code that is deployed at countless customer applications.

Well, I’m not in love with the name (I suppose it will grow on me), but I’m very excited about the prospects of touch-based “Ext” apps.
Regarding Raphael, it’s wonderful, but without IE support, we (and I suppose most non-mobile app developers) will have to stay with Flash-based variants for the kind of stuff that Raphael brings.
In the past Ext changed licenses of code. This completely destroyed my trust in Extjs.
Can Sencha be trusted not to do the same in the future? IOW: will jQTouch, Raphaël, Connect remain MIT licensed?
@Eric24 Raphael does support IE, using VML as an alternative to SVG.

Also to those who are worried about having to type Sencha instead of Ext, the company name is changing – it doesn’t say the product name is changing. Even if it was and you really couldn’t type the 3 extra chars, you could add Ext = Sencha to the codebase and leave your code unchanged.
There will be no change in the code from Ext to Sencha. You’ll still be typing Ext.
This is exciting stuff, looking forward to seeing what comes of it!

I’m so very excited to have a robust vector graphics library for GWT, especially since I can assume it will play nicely with jqTouch.. I’ve been poking around with tools in these areas already, and it’s reassuring to see some leading tools pulled together.

Congrats with combining this 3 powerful tools. Consider the name I do hope this will not infect the javascript part of the Ext-core. As a dotnet-developer we are using dhtmlx atm but are considering a migration to extjs (oke, oke, sencha). Hopefully we can be partners in the future. Looking forward to see what happens next, the graphics and mobile possibility’s are looking very useful :-)

Dumas, it’s going to take some time to refactor Dmitry’s code and have it fully integrated into the framework. The good news is that he’s well underway and hopefully we’ll have a solid foundation to work with for both Raphaël and Ext in the near future.
Will the new Rapheal link work with ExtCore? We have migrated our two main sites to ExtCore and want to link in with Raphael as we need some chart work doing.
Will the Ext4 upgrade be less painful than the 3 one was?
What will happen with the methods eg. Ext.get will it be Sencha.get ??? Do we have to rewrite all our codes?
As i didn’t clearly see the advantages of Raphael, i like the Charts of ExtJs, but jQTouch is great.
how will these be integrated in Sencha?

Yasin, not to worry. We don’t plan on changing the API at all to include Sencha instead of Ext.
We plan on discussing upcoming products in the very near future, stay tuned.

I am not sure why everyone is freaking…Ext will stay Ext, the company name has changed…and now the have brought on two projects that were relying on donations to payrole so that they can develop these projects full time and integrate them into Ext. It’s called corporate investment it’s a good thing.
If you swapped out your core for jQuery you would probably own the internet…

A foundation to hold unified copyrights and trademarks for the open-licensed code (i.e., MIT-style licensing) is a great idea. But what is the relationship to those projects also being “non-commercial”? Plenty of commercial projects are also open source, after all.
That is, commercial vs non-commercial is different from proprietary vs free. Not sure what the intended meaning of “non-commercial” was in this context…

Please put jQTouch on GitHub, bitbucket – you name it. Make it easier for others to contribute and fix bugs. That would really, really help the project more than anything helps.
Seriously, what did happen to Jack Slocum? That guy was a damn genius, and it seems like he’s been erased from the Ext/Sencha history, and seems to have no presence online. Did you guys have him rubbed out?

Apart from that, what made you go for the Raphaël library above an other non-Flash renderer, like Processing.js? Has it to do with performance, features, … or was it simply the only one available to merge with?
Anyway, this is all great news. The name is certainly an improvement and I’m looking forward to try out these new fantastic features (including the upcoming HTML5). The web is clearly going through a major change.

This has nothing to do with the sencha project at that URL. Before we decided to go with Sencha, we talked to the folks at the sencha project and they very graciously agreed to change the name of their project since we had already acquired the sencha.com domain (from a tea shop in Melbourne Australia, of all things).

Damn… Im nervous about the future of jQTouch now. After going from jQuery to Ext for 2 years Im now back in the jQuery camp as I’m tired of the Ext bloat. If jQTouch all of a sudden uses Ext core then I fear it will also become a bloated lib overtime. Fingers crossed it doesnt get messed with too much…

Hello: I’m working with Extjs and Prototype, I have a little question, as you know prototype give you a xml objetct right, but how can i fill the extjs grid with this objetct, can you explain me please.
I never liked ExtJS being licensed under GPL. A library really needs to be licensed under permissive copyleft for example LGPL or the like (ExtJS actually was once). So while Sencha effort is very nice, the inherited licensing problems of ExtJS will render it non attractive to developers. Look for example at Qt – Nokia gave it an LGPL option, and it’s an excellent library for generic usage.
Please, consider releasing Sencha under LGPL or other permissive copyleft license.

After a few days Sencha, I have a feeling that the focus is foremost on developing mobile applications. It almost feels like an Apple affiliate website. If I would be new here, I wouldn’t know that it contains one of the best Javascript frameworks available at the moment. I think that the way it has been marketed now is completely suffocating Extjs. I really don’t see why Extjs and Sencha couldn’t have existed next to each other. I am worried about the future for Extjs and I have a bit of a feeling that the “mobile” staff of Sencha is not too much into the conventional web of applications. Don’t let things slip away here please.
@ Johan. Thank you for the Ext JS shout-out. We’re giving Sencha Touch the home page for the next few weeks to showcase it. But we will have a more balanced home page after the introductory period is over, and you’ll see Sencha Ext JS (and Designer and Ext-GWT) get more exposure again.

So… You claim jQTouch will remain MIT, but here:

It clearly lists GPLv3 as the license for Sencha Touch. Which is it? It is exactly this type of unprofessional wishy-washy documentation and administration that has kept many devs I know (and myself) from using any ExtJS product and now, sadly, jQTouch. ANYONE involved with the development of jQTouch should immediately split and start another independent project that has no affiliation with ExtJS.
@Ralf I really hope we’ve been super, super clear on this in the blog posts. jQTouch remains a separate project, licensed under MIT, under the auspices of Sencha Labs, with an ongoing maintainer, Jonathan Stark, funded by Sencha. I really hope we’ve been equally clear that although Dave Kaneda has also worked on Sencha Touch, it is a brand new product (as is hopefully obvious from the source code if nothing else) and will be dual licensed under a GPL + Commercial license.

I am new to use Ext-JS and was surprised to see the strength of it. Now, Sencha Ext-JS is about to storm in.. waiting eagerly to see the change… !!!! Just out of curisity.. can we get a hint that what are specific domain the changes we are going to observe(directly dependent on new team of Ext-JS, jQTouch and Raphael)…

Interesing is that simmilar thing was with zapatec js libraries. One night zapatec, other day Funambol.
I hope that we could count on ext JS framework for a long time.
At least now I don’t have to entertain the arguments with colleagues about the pronunciation of ExtJs.
