A report, The State of the Octoverse: top programming languages of 2018 (from our friends at the GitHub Blog) shows that JavaScript is the most popular programming language, and its rate of growth is only exceeded by python, even though there are far more JavaScript developers than python. This is based on the number of unique contributors to public and private repositories tagged with the appropriate primary language.
